The most common questions tourists ask before booking — answered honestly.
Are Zanzibar roads safe to drive?
Main roads to Nungwi, Paje, and Kendwa are tarmac. Sandy beach tracks need a RAV4. Driving is on the left — adjustment takes about 20 minutes.
Do I need a special licence?
Your home licence plus a Zanzibar driving permit, issued by the Zanzibar government ($25 per driver). We’re not a government agency, but we can help you apply before you arrive.
Is self-drive cheaper than taxis?
For 3+ day stays, yes. A taxi to Nungwi costs $40–60 each way. A 7-day RAV4 rental is $175 total with unlimited trips island-wide.
Self-drive vs hiring a driver?
Self-drive gives complete freedom — leave any time, stop anywhere, no tipping. A driver suits those who want local knowledge or plan complex island tours.
Both options are available with Zanzibar Rentals. Here’s how they compare honestly.
Self-Drive Most popular
✓Complete freedom — leave and return any time
✓Stop at any beach, market, or viewpoint
✓No tipping, no waiting for a driver
✓More cost-effective for 3+ day stays
✓Privacy — your car, your space, your music
—You navigate (GPS provided, roads are simple)
—Drive on the left (15 min adjustment)
With a Driver
✓Local knowledge — hidden spots, best routes
✓No driving stress — relax and enjoy
✓Great for complex island tours and day trips
✓Ideal for first-day orientation
—Higher cost — driver fee on top of rental
—Less spontaneous — coordinate timing
—Less privacy
💡 Pro tip: Many travellers hire a driver for day 1 to get oriented and learn the island, then self-drive the rest of the trip. We offer both options — just ask on WhatsApp.

Practical tips we give every self-drive customer at pickup
🛣 Drive on the left
Zanzibar drives on the left — like the UK and Kenya. Give yourself 20 minutes in light traffic to adjust. Outside Stone Town it feels natural quickly.
⛽ Petrol is cash only
All stations accept cash only — Tanzanian Shillings preferred, USD accepted at most. Fill up in Stone Town before heading north or east.
🚓 Police checkpoints
Common island-wide. Keep your Zanzibar driving permit, home licence and passport with you at all times.
🌙 Avoid night driving
Minimal road lighting outside Stone Town. Speed bumps appear without warning in villages. Arrive at your destination before dark, especially day one.
🚪 Breakdown support
WhatsApp us immediately. We provide 24/7 roadside support and arrange assistance or a replacement vehicle as quickly as possible.
Is it safe to self-drive in Zanzibar?
Yes, most tourists find it easier than expected. Main roads are well-maintained. The biggest adjustment is left-hand driving, which feels natural within the first hour. We recommend avoiding night driving outside Stone Town.
What documents do I need to self-drive in Zanzibar?
Your valid home driving licence (held for at least 1 year), your passport, and a Zanzibar driving permit. The permit is issued by the Zanzibar government ($25 per driver). Zanzibar Rentals is not a government agency; as a convenience, we can help with the application before you arrive.
Is a deposit required?
No. Zanzibar Rentals does not charge a deposit. You pay only when you collect the car in cash or mobile money, or online by card (5% fee). No credit card hold, no blocked funds.
Which car is best for self-drive in Zanzibar?
The Toyota RAV4 5-door is our most popular self-drive vehicle, handles both tarmac and sandy beach tracks, fits 5 passengers with luggage, from $30/day. For rainy season or frequent off-road, the Prado offers more ground clearance.
Can I pick up the car at Zanzibar Airport?
Yes. Our agent meets you at ZNZ arrivals with your name board and hands over the car directly. See our airport car rental page for full pickup details.
Can I drive to all beaches in Zanzibar?
Most beaches are accessible by any vehicle. Nungwi, Paje, Kendwa, and Jambiani all have tarmac roads. A few remote beaches like Matemwe have rough final tracks, the RAV4 or Prado handles these better than the Juke or Escudo.
