These Terms & Conditions apply to all vehicle rentals from Zanzibar Rentals (“we”, “us”, “our”), based in Kiembe Samaki, Zanzibar, Tanzania. By booking a vehicle with us, you (“the renter”) agree to these terms. Please read them carefully before you book.

1. Rental requirements

  • The driver must be at least 21 years old.
  • The driver must hold a valid national driving licence that has been held for at least 1 year.
  • The driver must show a valid passport or national ID at collection.
  • All drivers must hold a Zanzibar driving permit, which is required by law to drive in Zanzibar. The permit is issued by the Zanzibar government authorities. Zanzibar Rentals is not a government agency and is not affiliated with the government. As a convenience, we can assist with the application. The permit fee is $25 per driver and is not included in the rental price.
  • Only drivers named on the rental agreement may drive the vehicle.

2. Booking

  • Bookings can be requested by WhatsApp, phone, email or the quote form on our website.
  • A booking is confirmed only when we confirm it to you in writing (WhatsApp or email).
  • Vehicles are subject to availability. If your booked vehicle becomes unavailable, we will offer a similar or larger vehicle at no extra cost, or a full refund of any amount paid.

3. Prices and payment

  • Prices are shown in US dollars (USD) on our website.
  • No deposit is required and we do not place a hold on your card.
  • Payment is due when you collect the vehicle, in cash (USD or Tanzanian shillings) or by mobile money.
  • You may also pay online by card using a secure payment link we send you. A 5% transaction fee applies to online card payments.
  • Weekly rates apply to rentals of 5 days or more. Monthly rates apply to rentals of 25 days or more and are quoted individually.
  • Included in the price: comprehensive insurance, unlimited mileage, air conditioning, free delivery to Zanzibar Airport and within Stone Town, and 24/7 WhatsApp support.
  • Not included: fuel, delivery outside Stone Town (quoted on request), the Zanzibar driving permit ($25 per driver), the 5% online card fee, traffic fines, and any charges described in these terms.

4. Cancellations and changes

  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the rental start time.
  • Cancellations less than 24 hours before the start time, or no-shows, may be charged one day’s rental.
  • Any refund due is processed within 7 working days.
  • You can ask to change your dates or vehicle at any time, subject to availability.

5. Collection, delivery and return

  • We deliver and collect at Zanzibar Airport, within Stone Town, at the Zanzibar Ferry Terminal, at our office in Kiembe Samaki, or at your hotel. Delivery outside Stone Town is charged at a rate we confirm when you book.
  • We monitor flight arrivals. Flight delays do not cost you extra.
  • The vehicle must be returned at the agreed date, time and place. Returns more than 2 hours late may be charged an extra day.
  • You can ask to extend your rental, subject to availability. Early returns are handled by arrangement.

6. Use of the vehicle

  • The vehicle may only be used on the island of Unguja (Zanzibar) and may not be taken off the island without our written permission.
  • The vehicle must be used legally and with reasonable care.
  • The vehicle must not be used for racing, towing, carrying goods for payment, giving lessons, or sub-renting to others.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is strictly prohibited.
  • Smoking is not allowed inside the vehicle.
  • Vehicles not designed for off-road use (for example, the Toyota Alphard) should be used on main roads only.

7. Fuel

Vehicles are provided with a recorded fuel level and must be returned with the same level. If the vehicle is returned with less fuel, we will charge for the missing fuel plus a refueling fee of $10..

8. Insurance

  • All rentals include comprehensive insurance.
  • The renter is responsible for the first $500 of any damage or theft claim.
  • Insurance does not cover damage or loss caused by: driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs; an unauthorised driver; deliberate damage or reckless driving; driving off-road or through flood water against our advice; or breaking these terms. In these cases the renter is responsible for the full cost.
  • Personal belongings left in the vehicle are not covered.

9. Accidents, breakdowns and theft

  • In case of an accident, damage or theft, contact us immediately on +255 678 723 942 and report it to the local police.
  • Do not admit liability or agree to any payment with third parties without speaking to us.
  • We provide 24/7 roadside assistance. If the vehicle breaks down through no fault of the renter, we will repair it or provide a replacement vehicle as soon as possible.
  • Do not arrange repairs yourself without our approval.

10. Traffic fines and penalties

The renter is responsible for all traffic fines, parking fines and penalties incurred during the rental period.

11. Limitation of liability

We are not liable for indirect losses, missed flights, missed bookings, or delays caused by third parties, road conditions, weather or events outside our control. Nothing in these terms limits any liability that cannot be limited by law.

12. Personal information

We handle your personal information as described in our Privacy Policy.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws applicable in Zanzibar, United Republic of Tanzania.

14. Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms & Conditions from time to time. The version on this page at the time you book applies to your rental.
