Toyota Alphard Zanzibar: Is It Worth Renting for Your Trip?

The Toyota Alphard is the most comfortable car you can rent in Zanzibar.

Seven passengers, aircraft-style reclining seats, dual air conditioning zones, and a ride so smooth you'll barely notice the road from Stone Town to Nungwi.

At Zanzibar Rentals, the Alphard starts from $60 per day book via WhatsApp and your car is ready at the airport when you land.

But is it the right choice for your trip? This guide covers exactly who the Alphard is best for, what you get for $60/day, and how it compares to the other vehicles in the fleet.

What Is the Toyota Alphard?

Toyota Alphard 7-seater rental Zanzibar

The Alphard is Toyota's premium MPV a large, van-shaped vehicle built around passenger comfort rather than cargo or off-road capability. Think of it as the opposite of a RAV4.

Where the RAV4 is nimble and practical, the Alphard is spacious and luxurious. It handles Zanzibar's main roads beautifully. It is not built for sandy beach tracks.

The version available at Zanzibar Rentals seats seven adults comfortably two in the front, two captain's chairs in the middle row, and a three-seat bench at the rear.

Middle row seats recline significantly and have fold-out leg rests. For a five-hour drive from Nungwi to Paje with stops, everyone arrives relaxed.

Who Is the Alphard Best For?

Three types of travellers rent the Alphard in Zanzibar. Knowing which group you're in makes the decision easy.

Families with young children

The Alphard is the top choice for families travelling with kids aged two to ten.

The middle row captain's chairs make installing car seats straightforward, the sliding doors give children easy access without banging into parked cars, and the cabin is quiet enough that small children fall asleep on longer drives.

One family who rented an Alphard with us last December had two toddlers and a baby they said the middle-row space was the only reason the trip worked.

Groups of five to seven adults

If you're travelling with five or more adults and want everyone in one vehicle, the Alphard is the only car in the fleet that does this comfortably.

The RAV4 5-door seats five, but with luggage, it's a tight fit. The Alphard fits seven passengers plus bags without compromise.

Split $60/day across six people and you're paying $10 each, less than a taxi from the airport to Stone Town.

Honeymoon and anniversary couples wanting a premium experience

Some couples rent the Alphard simply because it's the nicest car available.

The interior quality, the quiet cabin, and the sense of occasion it brings to a sunrise drive to Kendwa or a sunset run along the east coast road it's a different experience from a standard SUV.

If the trip is a special occasion, the Alphard earns its price.

Toyota Alphard vs Toyota Prado: Which Should You Choose?

This is the most common question we get from customers choosing between the two premium vehicles in our fleet. Here's the honest answer:

Choose the Alphard if passenger comfort is the priority. It is better for families, smoother on long drives, and significantly easier to park in Stone Town's narrow streets.

Choose the Prado if you plan to drive off-road or reach remote beaches on unmaintained tracks. The Prado has proper 4x4 capability.

The Alphard does not take it off tarmac and you'll feel every rut. The Prado is also the better choice for the rainy season (April to May) when east coast secondary roads turn soft.

For most family trips and group stays of four to seven days, exploring the main destinations like Nungwi, Stone Town, Paje, Jozani Forest, the Alphard is the more practical and more comfortable choice at less than half the daily rate of the Prado.

Driving the Alphard in Zanzibar: What to Expect

The Alphard is a large vehicle by Zanzibar standards.

Stone Town's medina roads are narrow and busy if you're planning to explore the Old Town on foot and use the car for inter-town travel.

Park at the Forodhani Gardens car park on the seafront and walk from there.

Trying to navigate the back streets of Stone Town in an Alphard is possible but genuinely stressful.

On the open road, the Alphard is exceptional. The 65km run from Stone Town to Nungwi takes about 90 minutes on smooth tarmac, and passengers in the rear barely notice the journey.

The road to Paje on the east coast is equally comfortable. Stick to the main sealed roads and the Alphard will give you a better experience than any other vehicle in the fleet.

One practical note: the Alphard is taller than a standard SUV. The covered parking at some boutique hotels has low clearance.

Check with your hotel before driving in, or simply park outside and walk the last 50 metres.
