How airport pickup works with Zanzibar Rentals

Forget the rental counter queues. Here's our process:

  1. Book on WhatsApp before you fly. Send us your flight number, arrival date, and a photo of your driving licence. We arrange your Zanzibar driving permit in advance (around $25).
  2. We meet you at arrivals. One of our team waits for you outside the terminal with a sign with your name — car parked nearby, permit already in hand.
  3. Quick handover, then you're driving. We walk around the car together, note any existing marks, hand you the keys, and you're on the road — usually within 15 minutes of leaving the terminal.

No shuttle bus to an off-site depot. No paperwork marathon while you're jet-lagged.

Why pre-booking beats the airport counters

Zanzibar's airport does have rental desks, but walk-up rental has real downsides:

  • Limited choice. The good cars — RAV4s and other SUVs that handle Zanzibar's sandy side roads — go first. Walk-ups often get whatever is left.
  • The permit problem. You legally need a Zanzibar driving permit to drive, and arranging it at the airport can eat an hour of your holiday. Pre-booked rentals arrive with the permit sorted.
  • Price surprises. Counter prices at airports are almost always higher than pre-booked rates, and "extras" appear that were never mentioned online.

With a pre-booked pickup, the price you agreed on WhatsApp is the price you pay. No deposit, no credit card hold — you pay when you collect the car.

What you need for airport pickup

  • A valid driving licence from your home country (a photo sent in advance is enough)
  • Your passport
  • The Zanzibar driving permit — which we arrange for you

That's it. Most customers pay in US dollars or Tanzanian shillings on collection; mobile money works too.

Driving out of ZNZ: first 10 minutes

The airport is about 6 km south of Stone Town. The main road is paved and well signposted — Stone Town to the north, the east-coast beaches (Paje, Jambiani) to the southeast. Remember: Zanzibar drives on the left, like the UK. If you're coming from the UK, you'll feel at home immediately; if not, give yourself a calm first hour.

Avoid driving at night if you can — rural roads are unlit and pedestrians and bicycles share the road. Most of our airport pickups happen in the daytime for exactly this reason.

Ready when you land

Send us your flight details on WhatsApp and we'll confirm everything within 15 minutes — day or night. Your car, your permit, and a friendly face at arrivals.

Book on WhatsApp: +255 678 723 942 — tell us your arrival date and we'll take it from there.
